Guitar Scales in Ableton Live — Modal Reference for Producers

Ableton Live is the DAW of choice for countless guitarists who also produce. With Ableton's built-in scale mode and MIDI tools, you can lock your guitar playing to modal contexts and build entire productions around specific modes.

Ableton's Scale Mode — Guitar Integration

Setting Ableton's Global Scale

MIDI → Scale Mode → Select Mode

Ableton's scale mode (introduced in Live 11) lets you lock all MIDI instruments and devices to a specific scale. Set it to match the mode you're playing on guitar — all your synths, MIDI controllers, and software instruments will automatically snap to the same modal context.

Dorian for Minor Key Productions

1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 ♭7

Set Ableton to D Dorian, play guitar in D Dorian, and every MIDI instrument follows. This is the foundation of most hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul productions. The raised 6th in Dorian keeps the minor key from sounding too dark.

Lydian for Film and Electronic Production

1 2 3 ♯4 5 6 7

Ableton + Lydian is the template for modern cinematic electronic music. The ♯4 creates a sense of forward motion and wonder that sits perfectly under arpeggiated synths and ambient guitar pads.

Phrygian for Electronic/Industrial

1 ♭2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7

Phrygian in Ableton creates dark, driving electronic textures. The ♭2 creates tension between the guitar and any bass or kick drum on the root — that tension IS the energy of techno and industrial music.
