Fractal Axe-FX Tones & Guitar Scales — Modal Guide

The Fractal Audio Axe-FX is the most sophisticated guitar processor ever made — and it rewards players who understand the relationship between amp voicing and modal choice. The right scale in the right preset is a completely different instrument.

Axe-FX Amp Models — Scale Matching

British High Gain (Plexi/JCM800 models) — Pentatonic + Dorian

1 ♭3 4 5 ♭7 + natural 6

British voiced high gain rewards minor pentatonic and Dorian. The harmonic bloom of a Plexi-style crunch sings with Dorian's raised 6th. Jimmy Page's entire approach was minor pentatonic through British voicing.

American Clean (Twin/Blackface models) — Lydian + Mixolydian

Lydian: 1 2 3 ♯4 5 6 7

American clean headroom and sparkle is made for Lydian. The bell-like clarity of a Twin Reverb model lets the ♯4 ring without losing definition. John Mayer's clean Strat tone + American clean amp + Lydian is the reference sound for this combination.

High Gain Modern (Recto/5150 models) — Phrygian + Harmonic Minor

Phrygian: 1 ♭2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7

Modern high gain voicing rewards Phrygian and Harmonic Minor. The tight low-end of a Rectifier model punishes sloppy playing but rewards clean Phrygian power chord execution with crushing authority.

Boutique Overdrive (Dumble/Bludotone models) — Dorian + Lydian Dominant

Lydian Dominant: 1 2 3 ♯4 5 6 ♭7

Boutique amp voicings reward sophisticated modal choices. Dorian and Lydian Dominant through a Dumble-style model creates the warm, singing tone that made these amps worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Axe-FX Insight: The Axe-FX's ability to perfectly model amp character means you can instantly hear the difference between Dorian and Aeolian through the same amp — or the same scale through two different amps. Use it as a modal learning tool: lock in a preset and systematically try different modes.
