BOSS Guitar Effects & Scales — Modal Guide for Every Pedal

BOSS effects pedals have appeared on more recordings than almost any other gear in history. But the right effect paired with the wrong scale sounds muddy. The right effect + the right mode = iconic.

BOSS Pedal — Modal Pairings

DD-8 Delay + Lydian — The Classic U2 Sound

Lydian: 1 2 3 ♯4 5 6 7

The Edge's entire approach is delay + Lydian/Mixolydian arpeggios. A BOSS DD-8 set to dotted-eighth delay with Lydian patterns creates that expansive, anthem guitar sound. The ♯4 floats between the delay repeats in a way no other mode does.

RV-6 Reverb + Dorian — Ambient and Post-Rock

Dorian: 1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 ♭7

Hall or shimmer reverb + Dorian = ambient guitar at its finest. The natural 6th in Dorian prevents the reverb wash from sounding oppressive. Bands like Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai use this combination constantly.

MT-2 Metal Zone + Phrygian — Classic Metal Rhythm

Phrygian: 1 ♭2 ♭3 4 5 ♭6 ♭7

The Metal Zone's midrange scoop is specifically designed for Phrygian power chord rhythms. The ♭2 and ♭3 sit in the frequency range the MT-2 emphasizes. Palm-muted Phrygian through a Metal Zone is one of the most recognizable sounds in rock.

OD-1X Overdrive + Mixolydian — Blues-Rock Lead

Mixolydian: 1 2 3 4 5 6 ♭7

The OD-1X's touch sensitivity responds to Mixolydian's dynamic range. Play harder for the ♭7 to bloom, lighter for the major 3rd to sing clearly. This is the Stevie Ray Vaughan setup translated into digital form.
